![]() With numerous great choices for frameworks, skills commonly available, and unparalleled flexibility in styling, it’s hard to imagine choosing anything else as long as you don’t mind your app looking like a web application.Ĭreating applications with the likes of Electron or MacGap is nothing new - there are several successful such applications in widespread use, such as Slack, VisualStudio Code and WordPress Desktop. Many organizations have substantial functionality available in the form of Java libraries that they would like to reuse and the corresponding skills, infrastructure and methods to build and maintain application logic in Java.īut building a JavaScript-only application isn’t for everyone, especially in cases where reuse of existing functionality is important. Taking an Electron-like approach to building such applications but with an emphasis on Java for the functional portion of the application could be a good choice in these cases. Java ships with a WebKit-based WebView for JavaFX. This made a bit of a splash, as previous attempts to embed a browser in Java apps were either using a sub-par Java-based browser, or had crazy dependencies and complex setup.Ĭreating a JavaScript application using a JavaFX WebView has been done before. On the surface this approach looks great - with the benefits of a state-of-the-art browser engine, standard APIs, no extra dependencies and tools to create platform-specific installers, many of the previous problems are solved. ![]() But the approach hasn’t seen wide adoption, in part due to these shortcomings: 1. Web developers rely heavily on browser-based tools to develop the look and feel of an application. Modern web browsers provide integrated tooling that provide a way to introspect and modify CSS and HTML. With a couple of clicks, developers can troubleshoot and try out styles and HTML, live in the application. This ability to change an application as it’s running is one of the cornerstones behind web developer productivity.Ī JavaFX WebView doesn’t have such tooling. The WebView is a black-box, essentially locking developers out from their most powerful development approach. One approach to overcoming this limitation is to include Firebug Lite, which enables inspection of HMTL and CSS in almost any browser, including the JavaFX WebView. I did get it working, and though it’s better than not having any tooling, not all versions of Firebug Lite worked for me and I was unable to edit CSS properties live in the application. To be fair, Firebug Lite is not intended as a replacement for Firebug or Chrome development tools. In the end I found that it was insufficient for my needs. No matter how good your JavaScript automated testing approach, there is no substitute for debugging JavaScript live in a running application. ![]() It’s the last-resort fall-back to figuring out what’s really happening in your application. With no built-in JavaScript debugger, the JavaFX WebView left me feeling like it was the early days of the web. With the UI in a WebView, calling out to your Java application (or the reverse, calling into the JavaScript web UI) is an important aspect of this approach. Unfortunately crossing the JavaScript-Java boundary is not entirely straight-forward. Though it’s possible to invoke JavaScript in the WebView from Java, and call back to Java from JavaScript, it’s not transparent.ĭata type conversion is very limited most non-trivial use cases will require Java code that introspects JSObject, a generic JavaScript type wrapper.

The Meiji Jingu Shrine is a 1 minute walk from the Omotesando Exit of Harajuku Station (JR Yamanote Line), or the JR Exit of Meiji Jingu Mae Station (Chiyoda and Fukutoshin Lines). Today, the Inner Gardens are also known as Meiji Jingu Gyoen. The Meiji Emperor and Empress were frequent visitors. During the Meiji Period (late 1800's-early 1900's) the gardens were taken under control of the Japanese government and named Yoyogi Gyoen (Yoyogi Imperial Gardens). Though his family owned the land, it is uncertain whether Kato ever resided there himself. The Inner Gardens were initially part of the residence of Kiyomasa Kato, a powerful political and military figure in Japanese history during the 1500's and 1600's. These days, due to the increased popularity of the "power spot" fad, a special security guard is usually stationed at the well to maintain the line of visitors and ensure that each person doesn't take too long in their admiration and photo-taking. This spot has become popular due to its designation as a "power spot," or a place said to give off positive, restorative, and lucky energies to people who visit it. The well is at the mouth of the stream that runs to the South Pond. At the center of the garden is the South Pond, a quiet body of water filled with turtles and colorful koi.Īnother popular feature of the garden is Kiyomasa's Well. There is also a large iris garden, which is at its most beautiful in June when the flowers are in full bloom. There is a quaint tea house constructed in traditional Japanese style. For a 500 yen entrance fee, visitors can enter the garden and stroll on the stone pathways leading through scenic forests. The gardens cover over 83,000 square meters of land between the main shrine buildings and Yoyogi Park. The shrine's Inner Gardens, however, are an often overlooked feature to the beautiful shrine grounds, and are worthy of a visit. Meiji Jingu is one of the most famous and important shrines in Tokyo, as well as one of the most-visited. To program the feeder you need to set the clock, program the mealtimes, and then the portions. Then you can start programming the feeder. Once you’ve done this, plug the unit and pour food into the tank. To open the desiccant bag holder lid you need to turn it counterclockwise (as seen in my “Petlibro Air unpacking & Review” above video).īefore pouring any food you need to wipe clean the tank, the bowl base, and the stainless steel bowl. If you want to buy a desiccant bag it should measure 35 x 20 mm or 1.4” x 0.79”. The lid comes with a desiccant bag holder that is not included. So you need to lift the tank cover by lifting the tabs on the sides to open it and then you can grab the bag inside with the manuals and plug. To start setting up the feeder it was a little tricky to get the bag with the accessories that were inside the tank because you can’t just pull out the bag that is inside (the shape of the feeder is slightly narrower on top). Watch my cat eating from the Petlibro Air The indicator flashes when the tank has less than 10% of its total capacity. The Petlibro alerts you in case the food is low by flashing a red light. Once you program the feeder the food will be dispensed automatically at the exact time you programmed it. One portion equals one full tablespoon (empty teaspoon next as reference) The good thing about Petlibro is that it comes with a feeding guideline that will help you select how many portions you need to program for your cat according to the daily intake you want your cat to eat and based on how many meals per day. You can program a custom feeding schedule for your cat, for example, in the morning, afternoon, and evening, choosing whichever time is better for you and your cat. I measured the portion and it was a full-to-the-top tablespoon, with a small kibble (see photo). You can choose how large a meal will be by selecting between 1 and 16 portions, where each portion is equal to 10 mg approx. The Petlibro Air can be programmed to dispense up to 6 meals per day. Same mechanism with the lid, you just need to press the center button on the lid to open it. In the beginning, I couldn’t figure out how to open this protecting cover to access the panel, but then I figured you just need to press the top of the cover to release and open it. I liked the lid locking mechanism and protected LCD screen that you can program only after you press the cover that protects it. ![]() The unit is not heavy but also not lightweight.
